Do you get the frustration of having to double tap on the quote key (") to display it? Here's your solution
Ever wondered why double or single quotes require double taps on the keyboard in order to display? I have always had this nagging issue and
wondered if it was a bug in my operating system. I later discovered it was not
a bug but was designed for a reason.
I will attempt to explain this and show you how to fix it.
If your keyboard layout was set to US English International,
your quote key would require a double tap for it to print to the screen
(strange?).
The reason behind this is to allow the usage of accents like
the Umlaut.
An Umlaut is a mark ¨ used over a vowel, as in ä, ö, ü, to
indicate a vowel sound different from that of the letter (Hmm....Please don’t
ask me to explain. I copied this from Here).
It is quite popular in computer usage especially in Germany and other countries
where hyphens are required.
To see what I am talking about let’s do a little exercise:
Note: You can only
try this if your computer behaves in a similar fashion.
If not please
ignore this test
Type the double or single quote key " just once.
Type the a key. Notice it has been hyphenated
Now repeat the process again but this time type the o and the e key
what you get is below
áóé
How is this
nightmare resolved?
Simple. Just set the keyboard to US and not US
International and you will be just
fine
And this is how it is done:
I will be showing you this using Windows 8.1 but the concept is very much the same across board.
- Go to Control Panel. If your view is in the Category mode like mine below, click the drop down and pick the Small icon view
- The View by Small icon will look like this below.
- Now click ok Language as highlighted below
- Observe in the language preference that the keyboard layout is set to United States- International as seen in the highlight. This setting is where the real problem is. Our objective is to remove this and replace with just ordinary US Click on the Option link to change the Keyboard layout
- In the Input method click on the Add an input method as seen below
- Search and select the US input method as highlighted in the image below.
- Then click on the Add button
- We now have two Input methods
- United States –International
- US
- Recall our objective? One has to go
- Click on remove as highlighted in the image below to remove the United States – International
- Once done click on the Save button
- And that’s it. You are done!!!!!
